Denny and Dick wore matching outfits while lil' Georgie went for a touch of baby blue. Ah, the crimes of fashion.

Who was the best-dressed of the ball? Why Cindy-rella of course!

Torturing Torture-boy
February 6, 2006 08:58

So far very interesting. Specter refused to swear Gonzales in, much to the chagrin of Feingold and (surprise) Patrick Leahy. In fact, Leahy was pissed and gave Al a hell of verbal thrashing. Called the tapping downright illegal.

Al is trying hard to keep from crying I think. Either that or he's pushing the anger way down. "There's very bad people and they use technology!"

Al says: "There's stuff I'm not going to talk bout. Securty, ya know...

Secrecy makes our criminal acts work! Only International communications! We have career pros doing this secret stuff! The NSA has safeguards! Lawyers look at stuff! I've been told it's all perfectly ethical. You bastids knew about this stuff. We told you! The president is consistent with the constitution..."

Consistent? WTF?

Albert Gonzales has a tell. He diverts his eyes when he's lying spreading freedom.

Maybe I'll take a swig everytime the little shithead averts his eyes. I'll be passing out in about twenty minutes. God, I hate this crap.

If Teddy can make Al cry, it will be worth the hangover.

The End of Torture
February 6, 2006 10:07

Well, for me and for today, at least. They took a bitty break so everyone can go poo or puke.

In the interim, Senator Session trots out a 911 widow and she just loves spying on America and informing the public that Bushco is spying kills our freedom.

That's it. I'm really done for the day. I never cared for dog and pony shows.

If you really want to be tortured by Torture Boy and all the gang, watch the live hearings on C-SPAN or stream them on the Internet at: http://c-span.org

The Rev. Joseph Lowery speaks during the Coretta Scott King funeral ceremony at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006. At rear is Pres. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr., took several jabs at foreign and domestic policies. 'We know there were no weapons of mass destruction over there, but Coretta knew and we knew there are weapons of misdirection right down here,' Lowery said, complaining that were far too many in the U.S. are living in poverty and without health care insurance. The Tale of the Panty Thief
February 9, 2006 06:32

Say hello to George C. Dalmas III.

44 years old. Married father of two. His neighbors in the upper-middle class Fairfax, Virginia suburb of Falls Church had no idea a rash of burglaries in their vicinity were being perpetrated by this supposedly normal family man.

According to the Falls Church News-Press:

"Police reported they found at Dalmas’ home a large stash of cash, jewelry, antiques, license plates and bags filled with more than 1,000 women’s undergarments. The home was raided by police at 7 a.m. on Jan. 31, and Dalmas was arrested after that..."

The kicker?

"...Described as a 'mid-level administrative employee' with the CIA, he is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case. According to Fairfax Police’s Office Richard Henry, some of the homes burglarized belonged to CIA employees, and Dalmas may have targeted them because he knew they wouldn’t be home.

In addition to the valuable coins, bills, antiques and women’s clothing, police found 'meticulous records', including real estate open house fliers, lists of home security vulnerabilities, maps, journals, datebooks and logs, all believed to be linked to his robbery activities, according to authorities..."

Mr. Dalmas is being held at the Fairfax Detention Center on a 1.6 million dollar bond.

Don't you feel safer?

Stealing Dignity One House at a Time
February 10, 2006 21:31

If you've never visited Riverbend's brave blog, do it now. She's a young woman living in Iraq. Her journal is titled Baghdad Burning. Her entry today describes a joyous birthday celebration and a raid conducted by armed forces later that night:

Suddenly, someone called out something from outside and it was over. They began rushing to leave the house, almost as fast as they’d invaded it. Doors slamming, lights dimming. We were left in the dark once more, not daring to move from the sofa we were sitting on, listening as the men disappeared, leaving only a couple to stand at our gate.

"Where’s baba?" J. asked, panicking for a moment before we heard his slippered feet in the driveway. "Did they take him?" Her voice was getting higher. Ammoo S. finally walked into the house, looking weary and drained. I could tell his face was pale even in the relative dark of the house. My aunt sat sobbing quietly in the living room, T. comforting her. "Houses are no longer sacred.. We can’t sleep... We can’t live... If you can’t be safe in your own house, where can you be safe? The animals... the bastards"

We found out a few hours later that one of our neighbors, two houses down, had died. Abu Salih was a man in his seventies and as the Iraqi mercenaries raided his house, he had a heart-attack. His grandson couldn’t get him to the hospital on time because the troops wouldn’t let him leave the house until they’d finished with it. His grandson told us later that day that the Iraqis were checking the houses, but the American troops had the area surrounded and secured. It was a coordinated raid...

Dick Cheney's got a gun and he's not afraid to use it!

No worries. If old Dick shoots you, there's always an ambulance close by. Nedra Pickler explains it all for you:

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Anne of a Thousand Acres
February 14, 2006 16:41

Actually, it's more like 825,000 acres. Nevertheless, give a big howdy to Anne Legendre Armstrong.

Born in New Orleans, Anne was a priveleged young lady that married well. Very well. Her husband Tobin Armstrong was a member of a legendary family of Texas ranchers. Among the many properties and businesses under the auspices of this family is the King Ranch. You might know the King Ranch as the location where Dick Cheney shot Harry Whittington.

While the MSM concentrates on Anne's daughter Katharine, I'd thought I'd dedicate this entry to the martriarch and actual owner of the King Ranch.

Anne Armstrong has one hell of a resume. Her husband Tobin, died last year and that might be why she's not getting the spotlight. Widow or not, this lady is one connected gal.

Currently, Anne is honorary board director of Southern Methodist University. She's also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She's on the boards of American Express, General Motors and is a trustee of the Smithsonian. Anne was once a member of the board at Halliburton.

Anne Armstrong was the first female US Ambassador to the U.K. She was also the first female chair of the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. On June 23, 1987, President Ronald Reagan awarded Mrs. Armstrong with the Medal of Freedom. Mrs. Armstrong was the sponsor for America's first nuclear submarine, the USS. Los Angeles.

Anne was counselor to both Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. In fact, Anne was so important to Nixon, he thanked her in his acceptance speech after being nominated by the Republican party in 1972:

"Mr. Chairman, delegates to this convention, my fellow Americans:

Four years ago, standing in this very place, I proudly accepted your nomination for President of the United States.

With your help and with the votes of millions of Americans, we won a great victory in 1968.

Tonight, I again proudly accept your nomination for President of the United States.

Let us pledge ourselves to win an even greater victory this November, in 1972.

I congratulate Chairman Ford. I congratulate Chairman Dole, Anne Armstrong and the hundreds of others who have laid the foundation for that victory by their work at this great convention.

Representative Gerald R. Ford was permanent chairman of the 1972 Republican National Convention; Senator Robert Dole was chairman of the Republican National Committee; and Anne Armstrong was secretary of the convention..."

Hat's off to you, Anne! We don't mind if Katharine gets all the attention. We know you're an astoundingly powerful woman. No wonder Dick Cheney feels comfortable shooting domestic quail on your little old patch of land.

**UPDATE** I've gotten my geography mixed up. The shooting did NOT take place on the King Ranch. Cheney shot the Whittington on the Armstrong Ranch. The Armstrong Ranch is adjacent to the King Ranch. The Armstrong family owns both properties. (permanent link)

The Obscenity of Abu Ghraib
February 15, 2006 07:47

In case you don't know this, I work for the Internet porn industry.

Mind you, I'm just a writer. I report on industry trends, computer technology and legal issues that affect the professionals in my field. Just the same, I've seen my share of disgusting photos. While there's a lot of porn that I don't like, I have learned to accept that as long as the models are paid, contracts are signed and all the participants are adult human beings, what people do in the privacy of thier own homes is none of my concern.

That being said, I think I have an expert opinion on what is and what is not obscene. I'm not much of a fan of the Miller Test. I would much rather be judged by community standards than let the SCOTUS define obscenity for an entire nation. I don't give a shit what Antonin Scalia says. The Constitution is a living document and the rules change with every generation.

The Sydney Morning Herald has released 15 new photographs from Abu Ghraib. I looked at them and then I got good and drunk. I can't stand this anymore. What we did to those people is obscene. It's torture. It's wrong and there is no way in hell that those soldiers would have tortured those prisoners unless they were following orders. I may not know much, but when it comes to obscenity, I know it when I see it.

This is pornography:

This is obscenity:

Any fucking questions?

Misfire
February 17, 2006 08:52

My ex-brother-in-law is a charming yet very troubled man. Our family never cared for him but we accepted him because my sister loved him. He turned out to be a bigger asshole than we feared. He slept around. He was an alcoholic. He did his best to make our family the enemy in my sister's mind. She dated him for fours years and stayed married to him for another four. She finally divorced him and she told me about the night she decided it was time to go.

In addition to the drinking and the adultery, my ex-brother-in-law was a gun collector. When I visited their house, I would estimate the man owned at least twenty assorted handguns and rifles. He even had a little assembly area where he made his own bullets. I know he went on hunting trips but I can't recall if he ever actually bagged any game. Just the same he was proud of his guns. He claimed to be an expert marksman and made much of his attention to gun safety.

According to my sister, one night, my ex-brother-in-law was cleaning one of his rifles in the den. My twin nieces and my sister were in the room as well. As my ex-brother-in-law was cleaning his rifle, the gun went off. He had neglected to make sure his gun was unloaded. The shot missed one of my niece's head by inches. The marriage was over.

We're against guns in my family. We lost one of my cousins to a gun. My cousin was playing cops and robbers with a friend. They had my uncle's gun. My cousin was the robber and his friend was the cop. The gun was loaded and my cousin died.

My father was a good shot. He learned this when he worked as a jailer. He was required to test his shooting skills as part of his job and he always scored very well. However, my father believed that most people have no business owning guns. He was also a police reporter for our local newspaper. He wrote too many stories about fools that had shot themselves in the foot or killed a loved one by accident. When dad worked as a jailer, the first thing he did when he came home was take his gun out of it's holster, unload the weapon and lock the thing in a box. I was never tempted to play with that gun. It held no appeal for me. Having it in our home did not make me feel safe.

When I heard that Dick Cheney shot his hunting companion, I was reminded of my sister's story about the night she decided to divorce my ex-brother-in-law. The 24-hour delay between the incident and the reporting of it screams cover-up. It's possible that Mr. Cheney mistook Harry Whittington for a covey of quail. It's possible that alcohol played a part in the mess. It's less likely that a load of birdshot, fired from a distance of 30 yards could pass through a hunting vest, skin and muscle.

While I'm sure Mr. Cheney never intended to shoot Harry Whttington, I don't believe the "victim covered by shooter who was swinging on game" explanation. I think the real story is stupider than that. My guess? Cheney dropped his gun and it went off.

Yes, I know. It's just a hunting accident. It's not like Dick Cheney got a blowjob. It's a non-story story with a non-apology apology response from the Vice President.

The real story is Dick Cheney's disregard for the responsibilities of his job as a public servant. Dick Cheney doesn't care for the press. Tough shit. If he didn't want the press around, then he shouldn't have chosen himself for the position. Dick Cheney works for us. He's our bitch. Not the other way around. It's about damned time we remember that.

I'm Rubber. You're Glue.
February 22, 2006 02:13

I learned a lot in the past couple of days. I learned that apparently, the United States has outsourced the management of our ports for years.

Until United Arab Emirates firm (Dubai Ports World) made a bid to purchase the company, ports in New York, Miami, New Jersey, Baltimore, Maryland, New Orleans, Louisiana, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania were managed by Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co (P and O) of Great Britain. What's more, some of our ports are managed by the China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) - a state-owned entity of China.

Our ports are managed by foreign companies and I'm told that's no big deal. After all, this is management not security. Donald Rumsfeld assured me that The U.S. Coast Guard handles port security. I feel so. much. better.

I've also learned that as far as monarchies go, the United Arab Emirates is not so bad. Sure, the UAE supported the Taliban but they stopped doing it after 911. Why should I worry that USA Today referred to the port of Dubai as a "logistical hub" for Osama bin Ladin operatives? That was then. This is now. That's over there. We're over here.

Silly me. My president sets me straight:

"I want those who are questioning it to step up and explain why all of a sudden a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard than a Great British company. I am trying to conduct foreign policy now by saying to the people of the world, 'We'll treat you fairly."

There you have it. My worries are groundless. When even Bill Frist asks that "the decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter.", he's an alarmist. When Americans ask questions about questionable deals, we're racists.

Got it.

February 22, 2006 07:42

via DU, via crawfordslist, via the NYT:

"...The administration's review of the deal was conducted by the Committee on Foreign Investment (JOHN SNOW!) in the United States, a body that was created in 1975 to review foreign investments in the country that could affect national security. Under that review, officials from the Defense, State, Commerce and Transportation Departments, along with the National Security Council and other agencies, were charged with raising questions and passing judgment. They found no problems to warrant the next stage of review, a 45-day investigation with results reported to the president for a final decision.

However, a 1993 amendment to the law stipulates that such an investigation is mandatory when the acquiring company is controlled by or acting on behalf of a foreign government. Administration officials said they conducted additional inquires because of the ties to the United Arab Emirates, but they could not say why a 45-day investigation did not occur..."

Noice. It gets better.

When I was doing research, the Dubai Ports World site wouldn't load. I took a look at Dubia Ports World via the wayback machine. I saw that in 2004, Dubai Ports World (DPI) bought a company named CSX World Terminals, a division of CSX Corporation. Well, you'll never guess who used to be CEO of CSX Corporation...

I'll give you a hint. He's currently the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Investment. You remember them. They were the ones that decided DPI didn't need the mandatory 45-day review. Oh yeah, here's another hint, he's the Secretary of the Treasury.

UPDATE:John Kerry and the Daou Report beat me to it.I can deal with that.
